SP: Yeah! I was lined up to go on rotation on one of the big DC monthlies, but Marie Javins, the editor showed me the script and I very ungraciously backed out. ![]() MT: Steve was about to do something else when he agreed to do this! It took a year to get approved but in terms of selection process, it was very simple. I just thought that kind of physicality that he had in those comics I thought was something that would keep it in a style that felt real. Then when we talked about illustrators I was like, 'Steve Pugh, it has to be Steve.' Part of it is because I had just read The Flintstones series. I get the first pick of everybody so I got Harley right away. The first was who is the character I wanted to do, and I immediately wanted to do Harley. A similar project was offered up as something that I might do, and then when they asked me I had two very obvious questions. MT: For me this is kind of a follow up to Supergirl: Being Super, in that I was in a conference room with a bunch of DC people talking about what I might do next. ![]() ![]() I'll start by asking how you were approached for not just a young adult graphic novel from DC, but one giving Harley Quinn a new, teenage origin story. ![]()

The quiet, thoughtful consideration of her best friend, Amy, brings balance but let me not forget about Ryder. At a blush, it seems such a simple little story about the angst of high school, best friends and a boy. On the contrary, I worry about it being dismissed or overlooked. Lying Out Loud isn’t a somber, heavy tale. She must make amends and be prepared to grant time for trust to develop again but her behavior has been explained, allowing her the opportunity for growth, and eventually…acceptance. Of course, a lying lifestyle cannot be condoned. There was more to Sonny’s saga, and it was unexpected. While I couldn’t actually do that (this is not a choose-your-adventure-book) Amy’s parents did that very thing and it was spectacular. I wanted to reach into the pages to shake someone, while almost equally powerful was the desire to offer comfort, promise understanding and open-mindedness and just to get to the bottom of it. Her father incarcerated and her maternal parental unit unaccounted for, it is easy to be empathetic….up to a point but the level-constant layering of lies- becomes incomprehensible. The tug was inexplicable, yet unavoidable-I just knew that there had to be something deep driving the deceit. The reader shouldn’t care about her story or become quickly invested, but I was intrigued. Sonny is a liar and a relatively unlikable character. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments The dinner koch review![]() I felt like I could really relate to some of the characters and did not want this book to end. Told by a man who has already gone over the edge himself, this novel depicts the struggle of what to do when your children have gone too far. Though the story takes place in the Netherlands, it could have happened anywhere. I loved the raw text and the informality of the narrator, making him very realistic. Through these passages, the reader is able to gain an understanding of and relate to the characters on a different level.ĭealing with familial confrontation, The Dinner would make an excellent movie. ![]() The four adults are out to dinner for almost the entire duration of the book, but Koch seamlessly incorporates past events leaving you with a much fuller story than just parents having a dinner discussion. ![]() Reminiscent of the movie Carnage, the plot of this book centers on two sets of parents (the husbands happen to be brothers) and an incident involving their sons. With a simple and very clear narrative style it immediately drew me in. ![]() ![]() ![]() More than any previous book in the series, this story crosses paths with several Disney animated films, including characters from Snow White, Pinocchio, Cinderella, and Hercules. ![]() The story starts with Maleficent succeeding in getting Aurora to prick her finger and then contains a mix of flashbacks to provide the mistress of all evil’s backstory as well as a recounting of the events that transpired between the fulfillment of her curse and the climax of Sleeping Beauty. ![]() Overall, they’ve become an annoying takeaway from the main storyline and I was secretly hoping their apparent demise in the last book was final. At this point, I’ve grown tired of this trio, especially as each successive book has expanded their role. While Maleficent graces both the jacket and inner cover of the book (she’s a dragon underneath), the pages of this book devote a significant amount of pages, nearly half, to the Odd Sisters and their good sister Circe. ![]() To catch up, be sure to read Fairest of All, The Beast Within, and Poor Unfortunate Soul in that order. However, fans of the most wicked villain in all Disneydom should note that these books have a tremendous amount of carryover and need to be read in order, or readers will be very lost. Author Serena Valentino returns for her fourth venture into the world of Disney Villains with Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy, a twist on Maleficent’s story. ![]() ![]() Not having had a chance to secure the rights to the release of official Beatles albums (remember that was in 1968 and all rights to Beatles releases in Israel at the time belonged to “Isradisc”), “Unatex” approached West German company “Polydor”, which had the rights to the Hamburg recordings of the Beatles (with Tony Sheridan).
